Description

This course will cover recent developments in some key areas of data mining preparing students for research work in these areas. A lecture-discussion format will be followed where topics are introduced and techniques critically discussed. The instructor will introduce major topics. Subsequently, students will be required to lead discussion on key papers in the topic area. Students will be expected to read before coming to class and participate in the discussions. Emphasis will be placed on the design and implementation of efficient and scalable algorithms for data mining. The course project will require students to research, design, implement, and present their solution to a data mining problem. For details, please see the course outline.

December 6, 2006
The list of papers and their PDFs is now available at \\indus\common\CS 636\readings. Please e-mail your top 3 presentation preferences by 13.00 hours this Friday. The final presentation schedule will be announced by Friday evening.
Section 8.1 from  Han and Kamber's book and Muthu's survey paper are the required  readings for our discussion on data streams.

The first project handout containing basic details about the Course Project is posted in the Projects section.
The schedule of research paper presentations is posted in the Presentations section. It is subject to a slight change based on the final enrollment in the course.

December 14, 2006
Project proposals are due on December 15 by 5:00 pm sharp. The proposal should be a formal 2-page handout describing the project, the direction you intend to take in your project and the set of any deliverables.
You can submit proposals by emailing at yasserm@lums.edu.pk. Note: No late submissions will be accepted. It is your responsibility to cater for any network problems or power shortages.

Be prepared for a quiz in the Wednesday class on the 10th.

January 18, 2007
Project 'Design Reports' are due on the 26th of January. Make sure you have started work on them, as there will be no sort of extensions.

January 25, 2007
Project 'Design Reports' are due tomorrow. You can submit the reports at \\indus\common\CS 636\design_report_submission\ by 5:00 pm. The submission should be in form of a zip file named after your group number.

February 2, 2007
The course Mid term is scheduled for 10th February, 2007 from 9:00am - 11:00am in SC-4.
